Rooftop Rendezvous {Liana} « Thread Started on Aug 22, 2009, 2:32am »
Today's events were still a bit of a flurry in Marius' mind. He still could not believe he had behaved the way he had towards Liana earlier. He had been caught up in the moment and had easily convinced himself it was all in fun, but it had been stupid and impulsive--both things he admittedly tried to avoid at all times. Things could have just as easily gone the other way had he continued to press the issue and act so forward, but by some miracle, she had changed her mind when he had backed off. She would meet him on the roof tonight! He was elated, and his focus was scattered as he stared at his music, trying to study it to be ready. Rather than staying on the black words and lines and notes as he sat on the edge of his bed, leaning forward, his eyes darted to each and every new thing that introduced itself to the room--a ballet member here, a chorus member there, sometimes a bug across the floor or on the wall. It was as though he was a child again, and he couldn't tell if it was from nervousness or excitement or even both.
His feet bounced as he glanced at the sun to see what time it was getting to be. Closer. Just a while 'til dinner, and after that he would have to go to the roof and wait for her. This was crazy; it was impossible. How could he do this and survive? What if he couldn't sing because of his throat being so tight from nervousness and his stomach was all in knots? It would be a mess. She would be there, beautiful as ever, waiting to hear the opening notes leave his lips; only, they wouldn't come. Maybe he would manage a squeak, if he was fortunate, but even that would be laughable. He felt a fool already and he wasn't even there.
With those...pleasant thoughts, the man pushed himself up, grabbing his music and heading towards the dining area, but it was merely for show and hopes that being around friends could help calm him down by joking around and making it easy to forget for a time. Of course, the adverse reaction was true. It wasn't quite disastrous or Murphy's law, but Marius was quiet during the whole dinner, sometimes smiling and offering a few words, but for the most part, he stared at his plate, pushing his food around and drinking a little water here or there. He didn't feel like he could eat. Naturally, Henri gave him a bit of a hard time for it, but because of the recent events of the Masque, it wasn't quite the same on either person's part. The tenor barely reacted, merely smiled slightly or shrugged and went back to pushing his food around and taking a bite here and there. He excused himself from the table after a while and headed over for the stairs to the rooftop.
He quickly made his way, only slowing as he neared some rather somber ballet girls and giving them a nod of sympathy. Quickly, he made his way up the staircase as he reached it, taking the time to breathe and catch his breath before emerging through the doorway and walking out near the edge, sitting on a ledge and staring at his music. Ok, he could do this. He would survive the night without looking like some love drunk fool. That was the last thing he wanted to appear to Liana even though she was probably thoroughly convinced of such after his stunt earlier in the day. He had to recover from that and keep on, sing his best, and enjoy himself, not make her feel just as uncomfortable as he or something. After taking a deep breath, he slowly released it, his eyes going to the door, wondering just how long until she would finish her meal and meet him.

For the life of her, Liana could not figure out how the silly twits of ballet girls did it. Night after night and day after day they somehow managed to go meet their latest love interest and maintain enough decorum to get through practice. Yes of course they were giggling and flitty but they still did it. What was more they could talk about their various affairs of the heart and seem happy. Since she had agreed to meet Monsieur Marius on the roof she had felt nothing but a severe sickness take over her. Part of it she was sure was guilt- for agreeing with him when he knew not what he was getting in to by even noticing her. The last person to notice her was currently being held captive by her father, her life in ruins, and her fiancee's at risk. It was a death sentence to get to know her at this point. Still, she had warned him. She had told him she might suddenly disappear, she had told him something might happen to him and yet he still pursued her so it could not be all guilt.
Perhaps it was nervousness turning her stomach; the same kind of sour churning that filled her stomach before she sang at a performance. Especially ones full of former acquaintances who might notice her, recognize her, even the slightest bit. But why should she be nervous? It was just singing, with a man, alone, on a roof top....But she knew that was a lie. She had heard his words today. She had been sneaking looks at him all through rehearsal and thank goodness he did not know who she was or she was sure he would be doing the same. As it was he seemed like his thoughts were elsewhere; perhaps on her? A smile graced her lips at the thought. It still did not quite seem right that someone should think of her as something special, something to look forward to. After all, it had never happened before.
In her life Liana had been thought of as a sister, a daughter, a friend, a possession, an economic trading piece, but never as something to look forward to. Never someone worth seeing. Besides her dearest friends and her mother she had never really seen herself as a person. Even when decent suitors came to proposition her and her father they always looked at her as a woman might look at a valuable stone they might want, or as a little girl would look at a new pony- a possession, something to train, something to own. He had never looked at her that way. The only other person, at least of his gender, who had never looked at her like that had been Nicolette's brother, but that was easily explained by their association through Nicolette. For Marius there was nothing like that. Then again there was not even something to explain his attraction. Part of her did not want to know the reason.
The only thing for certain in her mind was that tonight was drawing in too quickly and she was still unsure of if she had made the right decision. She had to live and love and act free, but she felt so poorly for endagering him. He could not, after all, fully understand what danger he could be in. She had not told him and there was no way he could imagine. No one had after all. Who would think that she; quiet, clumsy, little Liana could be an escaped heiress of a noble family with a great fortune who's mother was brutally murdered and who's father's cruelty as well as the dangerous nature of her fiancee forced her to run for her life and her freedom- no one. She would not have guessed it had she be on the other side, there was no possible way.
During dinner, while the others talked Liana's mind kept turning in this way. She could not stop it no matter how she tried. Eventually dinner ended without her taking a bite and she made her way to her rooms. A quick pinch to her cheeks to add some color to her nervous pale features and a quick grab for her cloak was all she needed. After all, who knew how cold it would be or how long he would need to practice, if he was even going to practice at all. He was not expecting other things of her was he? If he was what and was she willing to give it? She had heard stories after all, and everyone knew the worst could happen with certain sorts around the opera house, and Henri was his friend. Henri the biggest womanizer in the opera house! But he was so sweet and Henri was so.....so....there was no kind word for what he was.
Dread filled Liana as she ascended the steps. She did not even know the part for Juliette. She had never sang out before would she accidentally do so now? He had power over Monsieur Reyer and the managers as the lead tenor. If she did she as she should rather than as she did would he let her secret out and make her known? What would be her excuse if he did such a thing. She could not embarrass him, but she could not give herself away- to do so would be almost certain discovery and exposure. Still, was she not in that position already to some extent? A deep sigh filled the air around Liana as she looked at the final door and final step trying to steady herself. If she did not do this now she knew she probably never would.
Steeling herself, she forced a small smile past all her nervousness and opened the creaky door. A breeze hit her and she tightened her grip on the neck of her coat as she walked out. Just spotting him made a light pink flush brighten her cheeks. She was forced for a brief moment to look down before she spoke to him. "I do hope you have brought the music. I despise admitting it but I do not know the part very well, if at all in some areas."
