Character Basics
Full Name: Nicolette Martine Gabrielle Marcellinus-Jondrette
Nickname(s): Colette
Birthday: June 21st
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Desired Position: Patroness to the Opera Populaire
Character Information
Appearance:
Her rich red-tinted brown hair falls just below her lower back when completely let loose, and if not for her wide ringlets and waves it would fall even lower. She keeps it up in a fashionable arrangement when out in public, while at home plaits it and coils it on the back of her head, which is often covered by a stylish hat. She has a graceful, womanly figure and a thin waist, and looks good in nearly every colour excepting yellow and black because they make her creamy pale skin look washed out. Her careful avoidance of direct exposure to sunlight and manual labour has kept her skin smooth and unblemished. Her luminous blue eyes are large, with thick dark lashes and an exotic tilt at the edges that give her a catlike look of a frank curiosity. Above her eyes perch high, well-shaped dark brows that have a tendency to quirk upward often for many different reasons. Her nose is straight and well-formed, her lips small and most often holding either a small frown or faraway pleasant smile, and she possesses a stubborn little chin. Her brows furrow together slightly when she is thinking quickly over something. She moves with practised grace and nobility, and wears nothing but the most fashionable and stylish of gowns. Outside, she is never caught without a light veil and parasol to protect her lovely complexion.
Personality:
Colette is a fiery spirit within a cool, sweet exterior shell. She is ambitious, determined, and intelligent. Her father once said of her that she was a man disguised as a perfect little woman. She is as lovely as she is cunning, as talented with business as with the pianoforte, and as socially graceful and likeable as she is passionately possessive. She does not feel love in any other way than an appraising ownership; not saying that she does not feel tenderness and care, but it is with a strict feeling of property. This is all true except in the case of her daughter, who she feels is worth more than she could possibly own, though she fears deeply that once she is gone she will be replaced by another as wife to Jean and mother to Marie. Despite the tumultuous emotions and decisive shrewdness lying beneath the surface, she remains calm and collected and measures her actions and words with care. She is pleasant and friendly, though sometimes she does not feel so, and can be effectively seductive and flirtatious when it suits her needs. She can be mean-spirited and sharp-tongued without guilt or restraint when she sees fit.
History:
Comte Reinmund Marcellinus was a handsome man of great wealth and influence, descending from a long line of noblemen of similar prowess, and married a woman with a resembling background, Louise Adélaïde Jeanne Charlotte de Vieuxcourt, the second daughter of Comte de Vieuxcourt. The Compte was in love, however, with a maid, Giselle Ouisy. By some stretch of fate Giselle and Louise gave birth in the same night to baby boys; only Louise’s con, the rightful heir, was born dead. Secretly, the babies were switched, and thus Angel Marcellinus became the heir. Embittered Louise miscarried once more before delivering a daughter five years after the birth of her son, whom they named Nicolette (Victory of the People) for her ferocious battle into the world. She stayed true to this determined way of thinking through her childhood, even after her mother was committed to an asylum and passed away from consumption when she was four years old. It wasn’t long after the death of his wife that Reinmund married his completely common-born mistress, a fact that both hurt and displaced Colette completely. She was sent to a convent to be educated and “taken care of” while her father managed business and began a family anew with his love.
Still, Colette persevered and honed every skill and charm that she might need in the future, and grew up a perfect lady with the assistance and support of her half-brother, Angel, and her best friend, the suppressed Lady Nicole Deloncre. She used her quick wit, angelic appearance, and considerable cunning to manipulate people and circumstances to her better advantage. When she turned the age of seventeen, she began a long campaign of letters to her father containing all sorts of hints and persuasions that eventually led to his belief that there would be no better way to advance him further than to marry off his lovely, accomplished daughter to the son of his recently deceased associate the late Marquis de Jondrette, and after a hasty introduction to the young man eighteen-year-old Colette was married to Jean, age twenty-two, and became the next Marchioness de Jondrette.
Jean was handsome and infinitely charming, and Colette felt a great tenderness for him as soon as she met him. She was happily married, while he was barely resigned. A year passed and gave them a daughter, Marie. Shortly after Jean was called away on business to far-off Japan. In his absence Colette took to doing a great deal of charity work to earn her a place in the hearts of the people of her husband’s marquisate. She delighted in caring for Marie herself, rejecting the idea of nannies and nursemaids, and they became very close. It was from an orphanage that Colette first caught illness, which even she could tell by the little spots on her handkerchief, was consumption, the very same devil that had taken her mother. Thus she wrote to call her husband home amid the emergency, keeping her knowledge of the diagnosis to herself. He did not even know his daughter, and Colette felt that the last of her days should be spent with her family gaining the fulfillment that she felt sadly lacking. When he returned, she knew instantly that something was dreadfully wrong. The doctor that had diagnosed her gave him medication to deal with his “immense grief” in this “time of trials”, but her agile mind knew that it was not for her that he worried. In fact, she often felt that he worried that she wasn’t going fast enough. She recognized the look of a man in love; not with his true and rightful wife. They were finally informed that she had months to live, a half of a year at most.
Her heart filled with anguish and infinite fury just as her lungs filled with blood, she traveled after her husband to their estate in Paris with Marie to keep a close eye on him. Her love disintegrated into loathing, though she hid it well. She vowed to destroy the slut whom she was sure he harbored here, for she could not bear the thought of the woman raising her Marie or doing to her daughter what had been done to her by her stepmother. Employing the wily talents of some street men, and then stagehands, Colette kept a watch on her husband in his patronage of the Opera Populaire. He had always been quite fond of music and she knew that he sang to himself to achieve a calming effect, but perhaps it was a talent of the Opera House that had stolen his affections. Talented with music herself and with a singing voice pleasant enough to hush a drawing room crowd into delighted silence, she took it upon herself to become patron to the Opera as well. At the same time she began the early inconspicuous tutorage of her daughter in how to make her own way, unlikely as the talent was in a child of such a small age, Colette felt that she would need it, and soon.
