Age: 40
Gender: Male
Desired Position: Patron
Character Information
Appearance:
Gerard keeps his salt-and-pepper colored hair cropped neatly and despite his mounting age, his hair is as thick and wavy and it was in his youth. He was a handsome man then, despite the abnormal pallor of his skin and the dark circles beneath his fierce grey eyes. He has thick brows, a noble aquiline nose and a strong chin. He keeps himself clean shaven with neatly trimmed sideburns. He is a very tall man and is without fail impeccably dressed, usually in somber colors for a professional look. Following the death of his wife he settled for black in an appearance of deep mourning.
Personality:
Gerard is a shrewd businessman with a quick temper and an eye for absolute perfection. He becomes intensely annoyed if any possession of his is misplaced or sullied, and is known to act violently upon the person who he believes is to blame. He has a way with numbers that is uncanny and at any given moment is aware of his budget and his worth. He is intimidating in his presence and forceful in his bargaining, things that certainly helped him advance so far financially. He is merciless and does not tolerate disobedience.
History:
Gerard was born to a struggling merchant and his second wife, who died when her son was five. Five step-mothers followed afterward, all of which treated him and various ways and disgusted him increasingly. His father was a stupid fellow who practically gave away his earnings, forcing Gerard to live in poverty when he longed for riches. When Gerard turned thirteen he poisoned his father and was turned over to his step-mother, who coddled and cried over him until he could take no more. She followed soon after his father, knocked unconscious and thrown into the river. He managed to be taken in as an apprentice when he turned fifteen to a cloth merchant who had known his father, and enjoyed a generally upper middle class lifestyle from then on.
Despite his newly found prosperity, he wanted more. He proved himself a skilled man of business and stayed on with the family for several years. In that time he came to covet the beautiful daughter of his patron, Nicole. She was two years younger than he and did not hold him in high regards. Possessing only a minor title, his patron agreed that when she came of age the two would marry. Constantly rejected by Nicole, Gerard began to quickly lose his patience. He frequented the Moulin Rouge and other such seedy establishments in order to vent his frustrations. One night he tried to press his attentions on Nicole and she rejected him once again, which drove him in a violent fury to the Moulin to become exceptionally imbibed and seduce a beautiful dancer there with pretty lies. Both being out of their right minds with the drink, they married.
Gerard’s foster family rejected him from then on and he was forced to become involved in his own business venture with a new wife who was much too free spirited and self-important for his tastes. At first he tried to beat sense and obedience into her, but for the most part she resisted. He fell to ignoring her completely. His trade flourished and he made many leaps and gains, his fortune growing rapidly. It soon became apparent that his wife, Marguerite, had been impregnated from their one night of passion. He decided to spare the growing child in the hope that it would be a son to carry on the family business. Months later he was disappointed to find that he had a daughter, and insisted that she be named after Nicole, his former flame, in order to spite his wife for her failure. He threw himself even more into his business, assuming that one day young Nicole would be an effective bartering chip.
Fortune grew and grew and he was quick to buy up titles and advance himself in society with parties and balls. The meager private education that Nicole received was not enough and he demanded that she be perfected. If any failure became evident he would leap to beat it out of her, and any attempt of her mother to protect her was answered similarly. When she turned sixteen he began to line up the candidates for his daughter’s hand, which was met with fierce protestation on the part of Marguerite. Tiring of her antics and confident that fear would keep his secret quiet, he threw her down the stairs hoping to break her neck. Her neck did not break, though indeed the effect was achieved, and she died soon afterward. He continued with his plans, finally settling upon a young man of what he considered strong character. Soon after, Nicole disappeared.
Enraged and humiliated, he sent out search parties to find her. The Moulin Rouge was searched, and her good childhood friend Nicolette was kept under intense surveillance. Despite his efforts, his daughter was not found. He told society that she had been sent to nunnery to advance her education before her marriage, though there were a few that did not believe his story. He was forced to tell her fiancé the truth, which enraged him even further for his embarrassment. For revenge as much as her sale, he has vowed to return her and have her married off.
