A lonely day behind her, another certain to follow. Hana sat at the window of the small apartment...uncharacteristically her arms lay folded on the wooden window pane. It seemed as if each day were the same...a repitition of the last and each seeming to run together like a river. 'What day was it, what hour?' Hana wondered with a sigh as she looked out the window at the world she felt so estranged from. Of course Hana knew the day the very hour...but somehow without the one she loved it all seemed unimportant. Sitting their at the window Hana felt void of any thought other than when she would next see Jean, she missed him terribly and had so much to tell him.
Hana knew and understood from Jean that she was supposed to stay inside the apartment...but her desire and urge to be free was far greater. Her entire life she had been caged inside like a small helpless bird...no longer did she wish to feel this way. Standing Hana moved down a short hallway and stopped before a large chest of drawers. Pulling on a carved metal handle she opened the drawer revealing it to be virtually empty...except for an intricately created key. Quickly taking the key Hana closed the drawer and headed for the front door...her heart beat fast knowing her trechery.
Minutes later Hana was again walking out among the people...free but not free of care. Hana tightly clutched the key her knuckles turning white as she ventured further and further from the apartment. After a short while of simply wandering the area Hana stopped before a rather large and imposing building. Her dark eyes fixated on the structure and she concluded that this was the world renown Opera Populaire. Jean had mention this place to her and his patronage to it...perhaps in the future he might take her along with him.
Suddenly a hand grabbed onto her shoulder and Hana practically jumped in fright dropping the iron key. Turning she was met with a familiar face...she had been caught! Her gaze dropped the guilt evident on her own face...but a secret hapiness burned in her heart. After so long they where together again! Even though not under the the best of circumstances.

Jean's mind was clouded as he tried to get to Hana before she was lost in the crowd. He had told her only to stay in the apartment and nothing more! She wouldn't follow his only command, would she do this always?
Oh, but it isn't her fault, she lives the life of a recluse at a young age. She wants to see the city, but people aren't always as kind as Jean had been to her. But he wanted her safe and not wandering around Paris, knowing limited French and knowing no one.
He finally reached the streets. Jean spotted Hana in the groups of people ahead and he rushed up to her, grasping her arm. He felt her jump a little as she turned to face him. She stared into his eyes with little fear, knowing that she was caught, she didn't fight her lover.
"Hana, why are you out in the city without me nearby?" asked Jean awaiting an answer.
Hana sighed and tried to explain.

"Hana, why are you out in the city without me nearby?"
At his question a soft sigh escaped Hana's lips, their was no use in denying her treachery, she had been caught in the act...red handed! Slowly Hana's gaze lifted back to his handsome face and she offered Jean an apologetic smile.
"Jean..." Hana began in a soft whisper, her hand moved to grasp his. Using her best French Hana tried her hardest to give him a decent explanation of the situation.
"I know I've disappointed you but I couldn't bear being alone any longer...i'm losing my sanity without you." Hana answered adding the last part in Japanese unable to express herself clearly in French.

Jean decided to switch to Japanese to have a little more privacy.
"Hana," he said drawing her down an alley, away from the crowds. "I hate leaving you there, every moment away from you is torture for me. I'm trying to protect you, if people saw you, your reputation would be..." he was searching for words that wouldn't seem so harsh. "well, destroyed before you could start one here in Paris."
Hana looked at Jean with a confused look on his face. "What do you mean?"

Following Jean into the alley Hana gave him an expression of utter confusion, was she hearing him right? Obviously the answer was yes...then why did she still not understand?
"What do you mean?"
The young oriental finally asked giving him a quizzical look. Her dark eyes focused solely on him...as if the two of them where the only two left on the Earth.

Jean felt his body freeze at that moment. Colette was unknown to Hana and he was almost caught. He had to change the subject quickly or at least give an explanation.
"I meant that people find it strange when people just walk around Paris with no intent. Plus, people aren't always kind to people from Asia. I'm only protecting you from the evils of the city, they tempt us with the brightness of the city, then destroy us. But that's besides the point!" he cried changing his tone. "You disobeyed me, what if I found you gone? I would've gone mad, searching for you in one of the biggest cities in the world."
Hana looked at him with more sympathy and content.

"But if you havn't noticed, I'm the only one...from-" Hana began to rebut but was cut short when Jean quickly changed the subject. Her feelings were rattled slightly and she was still unsure of what Jean was trying to tell her. With another sigh Hana became submissive and listened intently to her only confidant. Hana felt like a child again being reprimanded by an unhappy adult...'I'm not a child.' she thought to herself as Jean continued on.
"Jean, I'm sorry... but I'm not a child!"
She replied full of guilt and slight anger, but now she was beginning to see where Jean was coming from.
"I won't leave the apartment again."
Hana promised with a great hesitance as if she were signing her life away.

Jean heard the sadness in her voice and decided to comfort her.
"Hana, I'm sorry I overreacted. It's not the end of the world if you leave the apartment. It won't last much longer, I'll tell you why tonight at the masquerade ball at the Opera!"
Hana smiled as she heard this. She hugged him and kissed him gently on the lips. "Thank you." she said with a tear in her eye. He wiped it away for her.
"I'll take you shopping for a dress and a mask. Those aren't too difficult to find in Paris."
Jean held out his arm and Hana took hold of it. They began walking the streets, unnoticed by the people passing them, going on with their lives. jean didn't care at that moment, Hana was with him and that's all that mattered to him.
