Character Basics
Full Name: Damien Michel Babineaux
Nickname(s): N/A
Birthday: September 23
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Desired Position: Singer
Character Information
Appearance:
Damien is a generally good looking man. His has dark brown hair that’s cut to a normal length and is usually shaggy and not combed over as some might do to their hair. His eyes are a mixture of the colors gray and green, and in the right light they can produce a sort of natural glow, which sometimes gives him an eerie look in the dark. Height wise he is very tall, going to about 6 foot 3inches and weight wise he is the normal weight for a man of his age and he is toned from his past on the streets, involving a lot of running from the police.
His style is very casual, usually just consisting of a loose, dark-colored, button up shirt with black trousers and a leather belt. On his feet he usually wears normal shoes inside, but outside he goes around in army style boots, which are not that normal in Parisian society, even in the lower classes. In the cold winter months, he’ll often wear a large overcoat that he stole years ago from a street vender and it has become old enough to have sentimental value to Damien. He believes that he’ll never give it away because it reminds him of how he could easily return to his former life, no matter how hard he tries to abandon it.
Personality:
The personality of Damien is one of a person who thinks realistically and logically. He isn’t much of a smiling person, so that may say something about it as well. He often thinks with his head, never really having an unrealistic dream because he didn’t have time to, he was always fighting for his life in a cruel world that didn’t care about him. At least that’s how he believes the world is. Damien can be kind, but not in a goody-goody way, often denying that he did a good deed, and he’ll do it so discreetly that you won’t realize he did it until you benefit. But overall, Damien can be cynic in cases, believing in the bad more than the good and he won’t take too kindly to you if you’re prattling on about religion, for he doesn’t believe in God or any religion. So overall, Damien is not the toast of Paris, he is not the popular one, he’s basically the one who shuns anyone who is the exact opposite of him and he won’t try to change for anyone. I forgot to mention he’s as stubborn as a mule.
History:
Born in wedlock, Damien Michel Babineaux came into this world on September 23 to Lucy Babineaux, a girl of just sixteen. His mother was once living with her bourgeoisie family in the high society of Paris, until she met Santiago Castillo, a Spanish noble who was visiting relatives in Paris. When they met, Lucy thought she was in love and that he loved her so they began courting each other and, well, to make a long story short, Lena was with child. Santiago had fled the country before Lucy could tell him, but she knew that the signs of her pregnancy had started showing before he left. Her fears were confirmed when she tried sending word to him and he didn’t answer back. With no husband to take her, the Babineaux family disowned her and sent her out into the street, closing all financial help that she had at her disposal.
Lucy had taken up residence in the slums of St. Michel, where she would beg for spare change, give birth to Damien (Whose middle name honors the location.) and live in a dilapidated apartment that she paid ten francs a month for. Soon Lucy couldn’t get work, no matter how low she said she could work for and she, along with Damien, was thrown into the street. Lucy would soon resort to stealing bread from merchants to get food on the table and her worst fear, prostitution. One night she would be recognized as a thief by one of her costumers and the police took her into custody. Damien was pushed aside and told to go to a convent and pray that they’d take him. Damien did this and was turned away, which made him stop believing in God and the Christian ideals.
Damien visited his mother in prison every day, for hours at a time, until one night Lucy took her clothes and hung herself in her cell. They told Damien of the news and it upset him so much that he disappeared before anyone could stop him. He lived the majority of his life on the streets, begging, stealing and to get money honestly, singing on the sidewalk. One day, an elderly woman heard him and claimed he had an excellent voice and said that if he would be the entertainment at a party she was having, she would give him new clothes and food without charge. Damien accepted the offer and sang at the party.
At the party, a patron to the Opera Populaire heard him and said that they’d be willing to take him there and audition for a position as a singer. They had needed new singers because of the fire that had taken most of it down and few members of the previous production singers had come back. It was an opportunity for shelter, food and money so Damien jumped at the chance, going with them to the Opera a few days later. He auditioned and they gladly took him in, giving him the script to their latest opera, Romeo et Juliette placing him in a baritone role. For once Damien was secure in a job and he is glad to be off the streets, but knows that he can easily be sent back there if he fails.
