Hello People! Mori and I have been working on an overhaul of affiliates, and will be posting more site ads elsewhere once we have a plot summary all written up. On the subject of the site's plot, does anyone have any suggestions on changes we should make to the basic plot? For example, should we change the past to be more in accordance with Leroux's book, or Kay's book, or mix certain elements instead of having a pure film/musical background? And how should we classify our "difficulty" level? Intermediate, advanced, "all levels, if open to constructive criticism"? I have made two header/footer sets for site ads and five buttons. Anyone else is free to make some. I, frankly, think that mine are terrible. But here they are, for your viewing pleasure! I think they look nice! I especially like the set with the peacock. ^^ My only suggestion would be that they perhaps be made a little less wide as a lot of forums now-a-days tend to be 665-700 or skinnier, which ends up being stretched if images are much wider than 500 pixels. They really are nice, though.
Plot-wise, I believe sticking as we are now is fine. It invites far fewer problems than going to base off a book or combination of book elements. I've read Leroux myself but I haven't read Kay's, so unless someone wants to explain to me differences, I'd already be lost. I believe the movie/musical is the most popular form of the story and therefore not going to cause problems should we get a person who loves the musical/movie but has never heard of/read either book who would have otherwise been perfectly fine and even promising as a member. That being said, I certainly wouldn't be opposed if we were to incorporate certain elements of either book into the musical and have an information thread in the plot board to explain to people those elements that are different. I think most of the differences usually relate to Erik, no?
As far as describing our advancement level? I think we're all at least intermediate here as we rarely post short unless muse is low, and our length isn't just a bunch of random gobbly-gook; it's all generally related. Whatever we do, I definitely would not suggest putting "advanced"--ever. That makes us look snooty, obviously, lol. But yeah, I think we could put that we are a friendly group of intermediates who freely welcome beginners who are willing to try and to learn. It might be a good idea to institute a minimum length allowed if we do open our arms to beginners. This way, we don't find threads with one-liners or find ourselves with not enough to reply to when posting with the new players. It's either that or we become picky on our sheets and look for the typical hints that someone is a noob rather than a newb and spend time helping people shape their characters to see what we expect. Trust me, that becomes tiring.
Anywho, that's just my two cents. Do with it as you wish.

Jen, I do agree with you on all of these points. I'm wondering if there is an image imbedding code for these forums that allows for resizing within posts, but I doubt it. Forum codes tend to be over-simplified. I will probably make a few versions. Once we have the images, codes and plot all laid out and agreed upon, any of you will be welcome and encouraged to help in finding and negotiating new affiliates, posting ads, etc. We don't need a huge flood of new members, really, but a few active, enthusiastic ones would always be welcome. Remember how wonderful it was to get Nate? As for plot elements, I really wish that we could base our plot primarily after the original book and take some back elements (the back history of Erik and Daroga, generally) from the Kay novel, but I see the flaws in that plan. Even though it would be a lot of fun and perhaps more toward the beloved familiarity and authenticity of the original tale, taking such an action present two problems, primarily: it would be unreasonable to expect people to be familiar with the books (even though our current members seem well-versed, it would be harder to take on any new ones) and even more unreasonable for them to be fans; and then, we've been roleplaying off our film-based version long enough that the switch would change a great deal of things (including the fact that Raoul and Christine would be missing and Erik would be dead, which is no fun!). One particularity of the plots is that the film places the events of the disaster in 1870, while the book places those same events around 1881. So, because we have been and most likely will be basing our plot off of post-film events, I wrote in my little rough draft of the plot that we are currently in the 1870s, and not the 1880s (as was formerly described in our old plot summary). I completely concur as far as the level of "difficulty" to be listed. Those who name themselves as "advanced" are generally the types that replace all the words that they should use with words they shouldn't just to seem fancy and can write an endless amount of descriptive nonsense (that can border on the non-English) that is unrelated to the plot, but otherwise possess no powers of plot or character development. We are not those people. Nor are we beginners -- if anything, we are "literate, of differing levels of experience, with open arms to those beginners willing to actively work toward improvement". I wouldn't mind putting in the extra time and effort into applications to make sure that the people we take in have what it takes (mainly, attitude); though it does not seem that, nearly six years after the initial showing of the film and without much to say for advertising, we are currently experiencing a flood of applications. Anyway, I would be happy to put in the effort. What does everyone else think on these subjects?
